The United Way of South Central Massachusetts (UWSCM) has been a steadfast pillar of support for the community for many years. The recent Annual Holiday Luncheon, held at the Sturbridge Publick House Inn and Restaurant on December 19, 2024, was a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and generosity that defines this organization.
The event was hosted by Alycia Dzik, UWSCM's 2024 Board President, through a program that was more than just an update luncheon; it was a celebration of the remarkable impact that UWSCM has on nonprofit organizations and the countless individuals receiving vital supports in South Worcester County.
Keynote speaker, Liz Hamilton, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Webster-Dudley, spoke about the increased importance of supporting United Way during these difficult economic times. She stressed that volunteering is an equally important way to give and that doing so not only helps those in need but is highly beneficial to the volunteer’s health, well-being, and happiness.
As the luncheon progressed, Campaign Chair Shana Bandelean of Webster First Federal Credit Union provided an eagerly awaited campaign update. The news was good – UWSCM and its community partners had already achieved 65% of the 2024 campaign fundraising goal of $645,000. This speaks volumes about the dedication of the community and the trust they place in UWSCM to make a difference. “In a world that can sometimes feel divided and uncertain, the power of unity is more important than ever.”, said Bandelean. “It’s the force that brings people together, inspires action, and creates lasting change. When we come together with a shared purpose, we can achieve extraordinary things.”
The room was filled with anticipation as retiring UWSCM Executive Director Mary O'Coin took to the microphone to share farewell remarks. “Looking back on my career at the United Way of South Central Massachusetts, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. It has been an incredible journey, a privilege to serve this community alongside such dedicated and passionate individuals.” Under O’Coin’s leadership, UWSCM has raised and invested nearly $4 million in programs to support the health, education, and financial stability of the South Central Massachusetts community. In 2020, she oversaw the merger of the United Ways of Webster and Dudley as they came under the UWSCM purview. She was presented with gifts and well wishes by those in attendance, including a citation from the Massachusetts Legislature. Mary is looking forward to traveling and spending time with family.
As the event drew to a close, Alycia Dzik introduced the new Executive Director, Kristin McCarthy. With a background in the non-profit sector, McCarthy brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the organization. She previously worked for 17 years at Tri-Valley, Inc., most recently as the Nutrition Program Director, a position she held for the last eight years.
Highlighting UWSCM leadership, hearing inspiring talks and campaign updates clearly moved the room and illustrated in real time, that together, we can remain “united in purpose” and continue to make our community stronger.
