United Way of South Central MA (UWSCM) kicked off its 2023 campaign with a Campaign Dinner and Pub Quiz trivia Night on Friday, September 29. The evening began with the launch of this year’s theme, “Bridging the Gap.” The campaign aims to raise $625,000 to support programs and services that help people in need achieve financial stability, health, and educational success.
“The past few years have been challenging for many people in our community,” said Alycia Dzik, United Way Campaign Chair. “Many in our community live as ALICE. Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Folks that work but struggle every day. Between the pandemic, inflation, and rising costs have made it difficult for many families to make ends meet. Our 2023 campaign is about bridging the gap between where people are and where they want to be.”
UWSCM funds over 26 programs and services provided by local nonprofits. These programs help people meet their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. They also provide educational opportunities, job training, and mental health services.
“Our community is strongest when everyone has the opportunity to succeed,” said Dzik. “By supporting United Way, you can help us bridge the gap and create a more equitable and prosperous community for all.”
The annual Pub Quiz sponsored by Dexter-Russell was held after the kickoff. Over 130 players vied for the “Sharpest Knife in the Block”. Over the course of five rounds the ultimate winner was YMCA team “Trivial Pursuits”. Runner up was Old Sturbridge Village Team “Grasshoppers” and Best Team Name was Boy Scouts – Heart of New England Team “Emotionally FUNstable”.
The 2023 campaign will run through December 31. People can donate online at www.uwscm.org/pledge or by mail to United Way of South Central MA, 176 Main Street, Suite 400, Southbridge, MA 01550.
